US Geological Survey</a>. Here's some info about the photo, which was shot (gasp) on film! Here's our <a href=https://www.popphoto.com/photo-of-the-day-june-2014/"https://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/TBT">#TBT</a> of a massive lava fountain spewing high into the air above an area of papaya trees. This particular shot was taken in January 1960 in Kapoho, Hawaii. A bit of historical story-telling from the USGS HVO website refers to Jan 27, 1960 and the town of Kapaho: "Late on that fateful day, very fluid lava was pouring from vents B, L, and K and feeding the massive <code>a</code> a flows between Pu <code>u Kuki</code> i and Kapoho. This new source of lava doomed the town. At 2330 the flow was nearing the town. In the next 30 minutes, the rapidly moving <code>a</code> a flow moved southwestward through the streets, overwhelmed building after building and leaving only memories behind. Personally, I love how this portrait shrugs off the traditional wisdom of “fill the frame with your portrait subject” and takes advantage of a dramatic and extremely beautiful background. The composition adds a good bit of drama, giving the sharp bird a nice array of bokeh as a background. Plus, the log slashing across the bottom left corner of the frame also gives the whole thing a dynamic feel.
